“It is crucial to talk about peace conditions that are acceptable to Ukraine alone. We are talking about an agreement that is acceptable to the Ukrainian people in all respects – from territorial integrity to security guarantees,” said Daiga Mieriņa, the Speaker of the Saeima, during a meeting with the Speakers of the Parliaments of Estonia, Iceland, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, and Ukraine in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, on Monday, 10 March.
“Our support for Ukraine remains steadfast and will only increase – military, humanitarian, and diplomatic support. Thank you to all those who are still able to provide this support now,” highlighted the Speaker of the Saeima.
Speaker Mieriņa stressed that Europe has been blindsided by its strategic partner, which has prompted us to fully reevaluate our immediate and future priorities: “This has given us the opportunity to reflect on how we will strengthen European defence. This has made us take the reins.”
The Speaker of the Saeima also underlined the need to continue imposing sanctions against Russia and finally get the courage to make a joint decision on what to do with the frozen Russian assets: “There are over 300 billion in frozen assets that Ukraine needs at this very moment. Perhaps these are the funds that Ukraine needs to come to a pivotal point and win.”
Speaker Mieriņa noted that we stand with Ukraine until either a peace treaty or victory will be achieved, emphasizing that we have been given freedom, but it is gone easily, therefore it must be protected every day.
Speaker Mieriņa is currently on a working visit to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the restoration of independence of our neighbouring country Lithuania, as well as to meet with Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Estonia, Bryndís Haraldsdóttir, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Iceland, Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Szymon Gołownia, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Poland, Jussie Halla-aho, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Finland, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine.
