On Wednesday, 25 May, within the framework of a working visit to Georgia, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, met with the highest officials of the state. Speaker Mūrniece said that “Latvia will continue to support Georgia and will urge for prompt introduction of a visa-free regime with the European Union. Georgia has diligently completed its homework and implemented various reforms so that its citizens may enjoy the advantages provided by a visa-free regime.”

“The Eastern Partnership was a priority during Latvia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, and Georgia can count on our continued support. Popular support is a key factor in implementing reforms. The introduction of a visa-free regime with the European Union would serve as a positive signal to the people of Georgia, and as a source of inspiration for further reforms. It would be another step proving that Georgia belongs to the European system of values. This would constitute an important contribution to the security of the whole region,” said Speaker Mūrniece.

Speaker Mūrniece assessed the relationship between Latvia and Georgia as a very friendly one, highlighting that it is based on the common historical experiences of both countries, including the unwavering desire for freedom manifested by both nations. “I am especially glad that my visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of Georgia’s independence. Freedom, independence, statehood and one’s native language are the paramount and most crucial values,” the Speaker of the Saeima said.

Security and defence were among the discussed topics, and the importance of cooperation in developing defence capabilities was underlined. Speaker Mūrniece applauded the close cooperation between Latvian and Georgian Defence Ministries, and expressed gratitude to Georgian partners about the bilateral military training exchange programmes. Both parties agreed that the current international exercise Noble Partner sends out a strong message before the NATO Summit in Warsaw.  It was emphasised during the discussions that it is imperative to strengthen the media space and counter the impact of Russia’s propaganda.

During the visit Speaker Mūrniece met with Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of the State; David Usupashvili, Speaker of the Parliament.

On 24-27 May Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, is on a working visit to Tbilisi, Georgia. Speaker Mūrniece is accompanied by Elita Gavele, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Georgia.
