Speaker Mūrniece: Latvia and Azerbaijan united by friendly dialogue
Latvia and Azerbaijan are brought together by friendly relations and dynamic parliamentary dialogue, particularly through the close ties between the parliamentary cooperation groups of both countries. “We are keen on furthering our successful transnational cooperation,” said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, at the main building of the Saeima on 2 February, while meeting Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, who is on an official visit to Latvia, accompanied by a delegation.
Saeima Visitor and Information Centre turns 13
The Saeima Visitor and Information Centre, which plays a crucial role in fostering parliamentary dialogue with society, is a direct source of information on the work of the Parliament and has been implementing various projects already for 13 years. The Visitor Centre was established on 29 January 2009.
Members of Baltic parliaments to discuss challenges in addressing security issues on the EU's eastern border
On Friday, 21 January, MPs from Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania will join for a meeting of the Security and Defence Committee of the Baltic Assembly (BA) to discuss the challenges in addressing security issues on the European Union's (EU) eastern border and the cooperation of the Baltic States in combatting organised crime.
The Saeima adopts a new Whistleblowing Law
On Thursday, 20 January, the Saeima adopted in the final reading a new Whistleblowing Law, thus improving the previous whistleblowing regulation and transposing the EU Directive on the protection of persons who report breaches of Union law.
On Thursday, 20 January, the Saeima adopted in the third reading amendments to the Law on Police. The amendments stipulate that the police may take a decision to separate persons posing a threat from persons in need of protection without a written application of the latter.

Speaker of the Saeima: the foundation of our statehood, laid a century ago, continues to  strengthen Latvia
“This year, we will celebrate the events that formed the foundation of our statehood. The opening ceremony of the 100th anniversary year of the Saeima was held in the Red Room of the Saeima on 18 January. This event is the first in a series of anniversaries to honour several important events in the history of the parliamentary system of Latvia.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima considers unacceptable the increasing presence of the armed forces of the Russian Federation near Ukraine's borders and in the occupied Crimean Peninsula since the beginning of 2021, as well as the increased militarisation of the Black Sea and Sea of Azov regions, according to the Statement of the Committee on the security situation in Europe, adopted on Tuesday, 11 January.
Saeima approves extending the state of emergency period to stop the rapid spread of COVID-19
On Tuesday, 11 January, the Saeima approved amendments to the Cabinet Order Regarding Declaration of the Emergency Situation that set out, inter alia, to extend the state of emergency until 28 February throughout the entire territory of Latvia.
