Speaker of the Saeima calls on the EU to step up support for strengthening its external border
The eastern border of the Baltic States is also the external border of the entire European Union (EU). Now that we are subjected to a hybrid attack carried out by the Belarusian regime at our border, we expect the EU to take more active steps in providing additional EU funding to reinforce our external border. Latvia would also appreciate an increased presence of the EU Frontex Agency in our country, emphasised Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, after meeting with David Maria Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, who was on an official visit to Latvia on Thursday, 19 August.

Saeima supports declaring the state of emergency at Latvia Belarus border
On Thursday, 12 August, the Saeima supported the government's order to declare a state of emergency in Ludza, Krāslava, and Augšdaugava Municipalities, as well as in the city of Daugavpils from 11 August to 10 November.
Speaker Mūrniece: active Baltic cooperation essential to overcome pandemic
I am very pleased that we can resume the tradition interrupted by the pandemic – the tripartite meetings between the Speakers of the Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian Parliaments, where we discuss the topical issues on the agenda of the Baltic States and their Parliaments. The Saeima updates anti-doping regulations
On Tuesday, 6 July, the Saeima adopted in the second and final reading urgent amendments to the Sports Law, supplementing the regulation in the field of anti-doping and adopting the requirements of the World Anti-Doping Code.

On Thursday, 1 July, the Visitor and Information Centre of the Saeima will reopen to visitors. The Visitor and Information Centre currently provides services only upon prior appointment in strict compliance with the epidemiological requirements and safety measures set in Latvia.

Speaker Mūrniece to Lithuanian Prime Minister: EU must be prepared to strengthen its external border with Belarus
The European Union (EU) must be prepared to support the strengthening of its external border with Belarus. This is important not only for the security of our region, but also for the EU as a whole, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, meeting with Ingrida Šimonytė, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania and discussing the increase of illegal migration on the EU’s eastern border with Belarus.
