On January 19, in a joint statement, the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Baltic States condemn the detention of Aleksei Navalny by the Russian authorities, upon his return to Russia, in what is clear to be yet another attempt by the Russian authorities to silence the opposition and critical voices. As set out in the Statement, the Russian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Mr Navalny and ensure his safety.

Vita Anda Tērauda: the Saeima supports the EU and UK’s deal on post-Brexit relations

 Duration of the unemployment assistance benefit scheme extended until 30 June
On Monday, 21 December, the Saeima adopted in the final reading urgent amendments to the Law on Unemployment Insurance, extending the duration of granting and paying unemployment assistance benefits until 30 June 2021. The benefits are awarded to persons who have stopped receiving unemployment benefits but have not found a job and do not perform any economic activity. The monthly amount of the benefit is 180 euros, and a person may receive it for four months.
On Monday, 21 December, the Saeima adopted in the final reading urgent amendments to the Labour Law to ensure more effective protection of posted employees’ rights in accordance with the European Union (EU) law.
Reinis Znotiņš: the new regulation on employee stock options will drive the development of new businesses
“The new regulatory framework for employee stock options will help transform our understanding of entrepreneurship and drive the development of new businesses. Our aim is to have the best regulatory framework in the region that will encourage the growth of new businesses competitive on an international scale. The framework will allow businesses to attract high-skilled employees in the long term. At the same time, it will help distribute capital among a broader population, raising their standard of living and letting them enjoy a share of the company's success," explained Reinis Znotiņš, Chair of the Information Technology and Innovative Entrepreneurship Subcommittee of the Sustainable Development Committee of the Saeima.
Voting by post to be made available to municipal elections voters abroad
On Thursday, 17 December, the Saeima adopted in the final reading amendments to the Law on Elections of the Republic City Council and Municipality Council, allowing voters abroad to participate in municipal elections by post. 
Saeima adopts the State Budget for 2021
On Wednesday, 2 December, the Saeima adopted in the final reading the Law on the State Budget for 2021 and the Law on the Medium-Term Budget Framework for 2021, 2022 and 2023.
