On Thursday, 22 September, the Saeima adopted in the final reading amendments to the Law on Personal Income Tax, thus changing taxation of persons who receive remuneration for working abroad.
On Thursday, 22 September, the Saeima adopted amendments to the Law on the Press and Other Mass Media which require founders and owners of mass media that are capital companies to reveal the beneficial owners to the Register of Enterprises. Mass media owners will be required to submit information on real beneficiaries to the Register of Enterprises in specific cases and in accordance with the procedure set forth by the Commercial Law.
On Thursday, 22 September, the Saeima approved in the final reading amendments to the Law on Participation of the Latvian National Armed Forces in International Operations, authorising the Cabinet of Ministers to decide on extending participation of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) in the peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan. These amendments will ensure legitimacy of the NAF mission in Afghanistan until the 11th Saeima is convened.
On 23 September, the Saeima will once again participate in Open Door Day and will welcome inhabitants and guests of our country to the main building of the Saeima. They will have a chance to see the architecture of the building and to learn about its history, as well as to find out more about the daily routine of MPs. Students are especially invited to visit the Saeima.
MPs discuss priorities of EU presidency with Polish Ambassador
On Wednesday, 14 September, the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima met with Jerzy Marek Nowakowski, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Latvia. During the meeting, MPs declared that Latvia supports the priorities of the Polish presidency of the European Union (EU) and hopes for progress in negotiations on issues that are critical to our country, namely, direct payments and Cohesion Policy.
In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 11 September, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, sent a letter to John Boehner, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
Saeima sets criminal liability for unlawful financing of political parties
On Thursday, 8 September, the Saeima adopted in the final reading amendments to the Criminal Law that impose criminal liability for unlawful financing of political parties.
On Wednesday, 7 September, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, in her letter to Boris Gryzlov, Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, expressed condolences regarding the tragic airline crash in Yaroslavl, which took the lives of the players of the Continental Hockey League team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
On Monday, 5 September, chairmen of the parliamentary European affairs committees of the Baltic States and Poland held a conference in Lithuania at which they adopted a final document calling on the EU to provide adequate cohesion funds to the less developed EU member states. This call was included in the final document at the request of Imants Lieģis, Chairman of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima.
Speaker Āboltiņa and Prime Minister of Montenegro discuss the significance of interparliamentary cooperation in EU and NATO integration
On Wednesday, 31 August, when Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Igor Lukšić, Prime Minister of Montenegro, she stressed the significant role of parliamentary support by partner countries in Latvia’s accession to the European Union and NATO; therefore it is necessary to facilitate interparliamentary cooperation between Latvia and Montenegro.
