On behalf of the Latvian parliament, Speaker Solvita Āboltiņa sent a letter to the Speaker of the House of Lords and the Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland expressing condolences on the passing away of Margaret Thatcher.

“Lady Thatcher was an outstanding personality. Her life story, her indomitable strength, and her ability to lead the country during challenging periods makes her one of the greatest political leaders of the 20th century,” states Āboltiņa. “Her speeches and decisions influenced events not only during her premiership but also long afterwards. She was a source of inspiration for thousands of people who wanted to get involved in politics. As the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom, she fought to shatter the stereotypes of women’s role in politics. She will be remembered as a great leader, courageous woman and a British patriot.”

The Speaker expressed the deepest condolences to Margaret Thatcher’s family, as well as members of the House of Lords and House of Commons.
