Speaker of the Saeima to Latvian Olympic Team: You are a team of gold
“In these Olympics you showed how strong Latvia is, how big and mighty we are. Not only do we have silver and bronze medals, I can say with full conviction that we have a team of gold,” said Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, on Thursday, 27 February, when meeting the Latvian Olympic Team in the Saeima to congratulate them on their success at the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
European Affairs Committee and Foreign Affairs Committee condemn violence in Ukraine and urge to bring the responsible parties to justice
On Wednesday, 19 February, the European Affairs Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee adopted the Statement on the situation in Ukraine stating that their deeply regret and strongly condemn the injuring and killing of civilians during clashes in Kiev. The responsible parties must be brought to justice. The Committees fully support the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia to provide medical care and cover related costs to ten injured Ukrainian protesters, and they urge the Cabinet of Ministers to expand the scope of medical assistance for the victims of violence in Ukraine.
On Wednesday, 12 February, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima met with Sarah Cowley, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Latvia. During the meeting, bilateral relations between the UK and Latvia, as well as issues related to the future of the European Union (EU), were discussed.
Speaker of the Saeima and her shadows meet with Ambassador of Georgia
“Relations between Latvia and Georgia are close and friendly, and Georgia has many friends in Latvia, especially in our parliament”; this was stressed by Solvita Āboltiņa on Wednesday, 12 February, as she and her shadows met with Teimuraz Janjalia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Georgia to the Republic of Latvia.
More than 250 youths observe the everyday work of the Parliament on Job Shadow Day
In order to learn about the everyday work of MPs and the staff of the parliament, on Job Shadow Day, 12 February, more than 250 youths from all over Latvia visited the Saeima. Shadows of other officials, ministerial employees, experts and journalists who visited the Saeima were able to attend committee meetings.
Voting system for Latvian citizens residing abroad to remain unchanged
On Thursday, 6 February, the Saeima re-examined amendments to the Saeima Election Law and decided that the voting system for Latvian citizens residing abroad shall remain unchanged – votes cast abroad in Saeima elections shall be considered to be cast in the Riga constituency.
European Affairs Committee approves Latvia’s national position on situation in Ukraine
On Wednesday, 5 February, the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima unanimously approved Latvia’s national position for the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU), where the situation in Ukraine will be discussed. Latvia’s position states that Latvia supports the signing of the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine when Ukraine is ready to do so.
Latvia ratifies the Treaty Establishing the European Stability Mechanism
On Thursday, 30 January, the Saeima adopted in the final reading the Law on the Treaty Establishing the European Stability Mechanism, thus making Latvia, as a member of the euro area, also a full-fledged member of the European Stability Mechanism.
The insensitivity of the Ukrainian government towards the will of a great number of Ukrainian people has led to dramatic clashes between the protesters and the police. This is said in the joint statement on the situation in Ukraine adopted by the chairmen of the foreign affairs committees of the parliaments of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The parliamentarians also urge European leaders to take a firm stand and condemn the violence in Kiev.
