The Saeima approves Irēna Kucina as a Constitutional Court judge

(09.12.2021.)

On Thursday, 9 December, the Saeima approved Irēna Kucina for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court.

Kucina holds a doctorate in international law and is elected associate professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Latvia. She is the author of several scientific publications and studies. Currently, she is Deputy Head of the Chancery of the President, Head of the President’s Counsellors’ Office, and the President’s Adviser on Justice and European Union Law Policy.

A new Constitutional Court judge had to be assigned as the term of office of the Constitutional Court judge Sanita Osipova expired in August of this year. Kucina was nominated for the position by the Cabinet of Ministers.

The Constitutional Court has seven judges, and in accordance with the Constitutional Court Law, judges are approved in office by the Saeima. Three judges of the Constitutional Court are approved upon proposal of not less than ten members of the Saeima, two — upon proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers, and two more — upon proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.

The term of office of a Constitutional Court judge is ten years.
