Speaker expresses condolences on the passing of Nelson Mandela

(06.12.2013.)

On behalf of the Latvian parliament, Speaker Solvita Āboltiņa has sent a letter to Max Sisulu, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa, expressing condolences on the passing of Nelson Mandela.

“It is a sad day for the world. It is a sad day for every human being who has ever fought for freedom, equality, justice and democracy,” wrote Āboltiņa. “His speeches and activities influenced events that led to the dismantling of the apartheid and to dramatic change in the course of history of our planet. He was a flagman and an inspiration for millions of people who lived their lives under captivity of racism, poverty and inequality.”

Speaker Āboltiņa stressed in her letter that Nelson Mandela was an outstanding personality. “His life story, his strength to never give up, his ability to choose reconciliation over revenge makes him one of the greatest leaders in history.”

The Latvian Speaker conveyed her deepest condolences to the family of Nelson Mandela, to members of the National Assembly and to the people of South Africa.
