On Tuesday, 27 January, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, participated in a memorial event in Poland to mark the 70th anniversary of liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where she stated that the horrors of war are once again ravaging the borders of Europe.

“History has shown that a lack of decisive action in times of need only fuels the aggressor’s feeling of impunity. Europe failed to be united on the brink of World Word II, but today Europe has the chance to act decisively and do the right thing,” said the Speaker.

The shelling of Mariupol clearly shows that the so-called Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics must be recognised as terrorist organisations and that sanctions against Kremlin must be intensified, stressed Mūrniece.

“Seventy years have passed since the liberation of Auschwitz, and today with the deepest sympathy we commemorate not only the victims of Auschwitz but also those who have lost their lives in Mariupol and in other parts of Ukraine. The statute of limitations does not apply to war crimes, and it is tragic that they are occurring even in today’s Europe. One must be held accountable for any crime,” declared the Speaker.
