On Wednesday, 31 May, the Saeima elected Edgars Rinkēvičs to the office of President of Latvia. Edgars Rinkēvičs was elected in the third round in an open ballot using ballot papers with 52 votes “for” and 35 “against”.
The Constitution of Latvia stipulates that the President of Latvia is elected with a majority of no less than 51 votes.
Edgars Rinkēvičs has held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia since 2011, he is also the Vice-President of the Latvian National Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), as well as a member of the board of political party UNITY.
Edgars Rinkēvičs holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Latvia, as well as a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Latvia, and a Master’s degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces of the U.S. National Defence University.
Three candidates were nominated for the position of President of Latvia: Elīna Pinto, Uldis Pīlēns and Edgars Rinkēvičs.
