On Tuesday, 25 September, Andrejs Klementjevs, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, within the framework of his working visit to Uzbekistan, had meetings with Diloram G. Tashmukhamedova, Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Ilgizar Sobirov, Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. During the meetings, Klementjevs stressed that in the Central Asia region Uzbekistan is an important and promising cooperation partner for Latvia.

“Currently the bilateral relations of Latvia and Uzbekistan are active, and the frequent exchange of visits of high-level delegations indicates that our relations are becoming even more dynamic. I am pleased that within the framework of this visit we can strengthen and develop our bilateral dialogue also on the parliamentary level,” said the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima. He emphasised that the Cooperation Memorandum signed between interparliamentary cooperation groups of both parliaments attests to the desire to improve our interparliamentary cooperation.

During the meetings with the officials of the Oliy Majlis, Klementjevs acknowledged that taking into account the common historical experience of both countries and Latvia’s membership in the European Union and NATO, we are willing to share with Uzbekistan our experience in implementing reforms. “Latvia has carried out significant reforms, and we are ready to share this experience with our colleagues both on political and administrative levels,” said the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, noting that Latvia is willing to collaborate on a wide range of issues, including streamlining of the legislative process, particularly with regard to cooperation with social partners and non-governmental organisations, use of information technologies, and raising of public awareness.

During the discussions, particular attention was paid to the need to develop bilateral economic cooperation. “The broad bilateral legal framework serves as a good platform for further development of economic cooperation between Latvia and Uzbekistan. The strategic geographical location of both countries is also very significant – Uzbekistan is an important transit hub for road transport from Europe to Eastern Asia, whereas Latvia has well-developed ports and transit infrastructure that connect the East with the single market of the EU,” emphasised Klementjevs. He said that entrepreneurs and representatives of local governments who are accompanying him on this visit and establishing contacts in Uzbekistan demonstrate Latvia’s interest in collaboration.

Today Klementjevs also had a meeting with Vladimir Norov, First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan. During the meeting, both parties agreed on possible cooperation in the fields of tourism and education; that is already being promoted by direct flights between the two countries. The parties also discussed bringing manufactured goods up to EU standards.

In the course of the discussion, Norov affirmed Uzbekistan’s interest in collaborating in the fields of green economy, especially waste management, ecology and renewable energy sources. He also commended the work of the ambassador and the Embassy of Latvia in Uzbekistan.

Deputy Speaker Andrejs Klementjevs is on a working visit to Uzbekistan from 25 to 29 September.
