The Saeima: 4 May is renamed as the Day of the Renewal of Independence of the Republic of Latvia

(08.04.2011.)

On Thursday, 7 April, the parliament adopted in the third reading amendments to the Law on Public Holidays, Commemorative Days and Days of Significance, and thus 4 May was renamed as the Day of the Renewal of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, and 21 August as the Day of the Adoption of the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia.

Until now, according to the Law, 4 May was the Day of the Proclamation of the Declaration on the Renewal of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, and 21 August was the Day of the Adoption of the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia and De Facto Renewal of Independence of the Republic of Latvia. Ingrīda Circene, Chairperson of the Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee, expressed the hope that with the change of their names, these dates will have a stronger symbolic meaning.

Amendments to this Law also designates 17 May as Firefighter and Rescuer Day and the third Sunday of June as Medical Staff Day.
