Border guard specialists trained in Latvia to be recognised across the EU

(29.01.2015.)

On Thursday, 29 January, the Saeima in the third reading adopted a draft law that will enable Rēzekne Higher Education Institution (RHEI), in cooperation with its foreign counterparts, to develop a master’s study programme for border guards.

Jānis Vucāns, Chairman of the Education, Culture and Science Committee, which is responsible for consideration of the draft law, explained that the jointly developed international study programme for border guards will ensure recognition of the diplomas of graduates in other EU member states.

“In the context of the EU’s current security situation, it is important for Latvia to provide training for border guards who will be prepared to perform their duties on the borders of any EU member state and to face a wide range of challenges. The implementation of this study programme will demonstrate Latvia’s concern about the security of the entire external border of the EU,” said Vucāns.

The master’s study programme will be launched at the RHEI on 1 September 2015, and it will also be offered by five partner education establishments in Estonia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Spain.
