The Latvian parliament once again approves Valdis Dombrovskis as the Prime Minister
On Tuesday, 25 October, the Saeima during its extraordinary plenary sitting with 57 votes for and 38 votes against once again approved Valdis Dombrovskis as the Prime Minister and gave a vote of confidence to his Cabinet of Ministers.
On Monday, 24 October, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, in her letter to Cemil Çiçek, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey, expressed condolences regarding the devastating earthquake in the Van province that took lives of more than 200 people.

Āboltiņa becomes the second Speaker in Latvia’s history who has been re-elected for a second term
On Tuesday, 18 October, Solvita Āboltiņa was elected as the Speaker of the 11th Saeima; thus she has become the second Speaker of the Saeima in the history of Latvia who has been re-elected as the Speaker after the election of a new parliament.
On Sunday, 15 October, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, in her letter to Ene Ergma, Speaker of the Estonian parliament, expressed condolences regarding the death of Agris Hutrof, a corporal of the Estonian contingent who died while serving in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. On behalf of the Saeima, Speaker Āboltiņa expressed heartfelt condolences to the Estonian people and the soldier’s family.
Mandates of members of the 11th Saeima approved
On Monday, 17 October, the 11th Saeima held its first sitting during which it approved the mandates of 100 MPs.
Winners of the Baltic Assembly Prize in 2011
On Friday, 14 October, the Joint Judging Committee convened in the Saeima to evaluate nominees for the Baltic Assembly Prizes, and it decided to award the Prize for the Arts to Andris Nelsons, a conductor; the Prize for Literature to Arvydas Juozaitis, a philosopher and writer; and the Prize for Science to Andres Ilmar Kasekamp.
On Monday, 17 October, the 11th Saeima will hold its first sitting. It will begin at 9:00 a.m.
The 10th convocation of the Saeima can be characterised by active work on foreign policy matters – it organised the first parliamentary foreign policy debate, established even closer ties with parliamentarians of other Baltic States and Nordic Countries, and on the European level it lobbied matters essential to our state regarding Cohesion Policy and Common Agricultural Policy, indicates Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima.
On Thursday, 13 October, in the final reading, the Saeima adopted amendments to the Law on Forests drafted by its Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee. The amendments improve forest management and reduce the bureaucracy in this sector.
