On Thursday, 9 October, the Saeima adopted a statement condemning the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to restore full participation of Russia and Belarus in the Paralympic movement.
Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica: Experience of the Baltic States can inspire Western Balkan reforms on the path toward the EU (09.10.2025.)
On Thursday, 9 October, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, took part in a discussion, titled “Strengthening the Case for WB Enlargement: How can the Baltics Help?”, held during the Rīga Conference 2025—the largest security and foreign policy forum in the Nordic region. The discussion focused on analysing the situation in the Western Balkans and exploring how the Baltic States can contribute and support the region’s path toward EU membership, as well as help counter threats, mainly Russia’s destabilizing efforts, along the way.
Latvia transposes the new EU regulation on pollution (09.10.2025.)
On Thursday, 9 October, the Saeima adopted urgent amendments to the Law on Pollution, which stipulate that fuel and heating operators will be required to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit climate change.
Latvia has a strong ecumenical tradition, and the doors of the Saeima are open to all denominations, stated Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, as she met with the delegation of the Lutheran World Federation at the Parliament of Latvia. The delegation was also welcomed by Deputy Speaker Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica and Deputy Secretary Jānis Grasbergs, who is also the Chair of the Parliamentary group for cooperation with religious organizations.
On Friday, 3 October, senior citizens gathered to discuss the silver economy together with policymakers at the Saeima. The event was held for the second time at the Parliament building in the context of the International Day of Older Persons, which is celebrated worldwide on October 1.
The 2025 Baltic Assembly Prize in the Arts will be awarded to Latvian conductor Kaspars Putniņš (03.10.2025.)
At the Saeima on Friday, 3 October, an international jury decided to award this year's Baltic Assembly (BA) Prize in the arts to Latvian conductor Kaspars Putniņš for his performance with the Latvian Radio Choir in the concert program Stream of Dreams ("Sapņu straume"), which took place on 31 March 2023 during the Baltic Music Days in the Great Hall of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in Riga.
On Thursday, 2 October, the Saeima adopted in the final reading amendments to the Immigration Law, establishing additional restrictions on the issue of residence permits to foreigners with a prior criminal record.
Group for promoting cooperation with the Saeima established during Speaker Mieriņa’s visit to Ireland (01.10.2025.)
During her visit to the Parliament of Ireland, Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Verona Murphy, Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil Éireann, and a decision was made to establish a parliamentary group for promoting cooperation with the Parliament of Latvia.
“Latvia and Ireland are like-minded countries with a shared understanding of the most important issues facing the European Union, as well as successful cooperation within international organisations,” emphasised Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, during her visit to Dublin on Tuesday, 30 September, where she met with representatives of the Parliament of Ireland.
