On Wednesday, 22 February, while meeting with Sandra Kalniete and James Nicholson, members of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, and discussing how to reform the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union (EU), members of the Saeima stressed the need to find a more equitable way of distributing EU’s agricultural funds starting in 2014.

Presentation on adoption of laws in Latvia (23.02.2012.)
The Saeima has added a new item to its collection of informative materials aimed at increasing the accessibility of the parliament and giving everyone a chance to learn about various aspects of work of the Saeima. The Saeima website www.saeima.lv now offers a presentation about the adoption of laws. The presentation will also be sent to schools, encouraging them to use it as a teaching tool for explaining the work of the parliament.
Students show a great interest in the opportunity to learn about the professional life of MPs and staff members of the Saeima. On Wednesday, 15 February, the Saeima hosted 280 shadows and thus became one of the most popular hosts of shadows in the state.

On Monday, 13 February, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, during her official visit to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, in an official ceremony opened the new building of the Latvian Embassy. Renovated premises, which are more customer-friendly, will ensure that the increasingly growing demand for Latvian visas is met.

Legal Affairs Committee supports the legal framework for the European Citizens’ Initiative (08.02.2012.)
On Wednesday, 8 February, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima conceptually supported amendments to the Law on National Referendums and Initiation of Legislation which will enable the general public to participate in the European Union (EU) policy-making.
On Monday, 6 February, the Presidium of the Saeima approved the Steering Committee for planning the parliamentary dimension of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). The Committee, which includes representatives of all the parliamentary groups and the group of unaffiliated MPs, will draft a programme of parliamentary events for Latvia’s EU Presidency.
