“Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own security,” stated Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa during her meeting with Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, held on Thursday, 1 May, at the Ādaži Military Base.

Speaker Mieriņa underlined that Latvia and Poland are close partners engaged in active political dialogue and cooperation on regional, European Union, and NATO matters. “Poland plays a strategic role in strengthening the security and resilience of our region,” she noted, expressing particular appreciation for Poland’s decision to increase its military presence in the multinational brigade stationed in Latvia this summer.

Discussing Poland’s forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Speaker commended Poland’s leadership in highlighting key security priorities—especially the situation on the eastern flank and continued support for Ukraine. Both sides affirmed the need to maintain a policy of isolating Russia and to further strengthen sanctions against the aggressor state.

Speaker Mieriņa and Marshal Kidawa-Błońska also addressed the importance of European unity and coordination within the transatlantic partnership.

Speaker Mieriņa extended her congratulations to Poland on two upcoming occasions: the Day of Polonia and Poles Abroad, celebrated on 2 May, and the Constitution Day on 3 May—marking the adoption of the first modern national constitution in Europe by the Polish Sejm in 1791.

The two parliamentary leaders also discussed opportunities to further diversify economic cooperation between Latvia and Poland. Poland remains one of Latvia’s most significant foreign trade partners.
