Saeima donates van to support Ukraine

(13.12.2023.)

A van previously used by the Parliament of Latvia will be delivered to Chernihiv Oblast in Ukraine to supplement the fleet of vehicles, which is crucial to ensure the rotation of army troops to the front line. Today, the Saeima Presidium made a decision to donate the van owned by the Parliament to Ukraine.

The nine-seat van will be delivered to Ukraine by the Twitter Convoy organised by association Agendum, which provides material support for the country ravaged by war.

The van should reach its destination in Ukraine shortly before Christmas, along with donations from the Latvian Parliament. The staff and Members of the Saeima have joined efforts in the Parliament’s annual Christmas charity event in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine, providing gifts, clothes, hygiene products, and food for students of a boarding school in the Yablunivka village, Chernihiv Oblast. Most children at the school are orphans or left without parental care for various reasons. The school also houses several schoolchildren whose fathers have gone to the front to defend Ukraine’s independence.

Every year in December, the Latvian Parliament unites in a Christmas charity event to provide gifts for children who are in particular need of support. Ever since Russia’s full-scale invasion started, the focus is on Ukraine. Last year, MPs and staff of the Saeima sent a donation to a children’s education and rehabilitation centre in Udaitsi, Chernihiv, where most students have special needs. Latvia is participating in the reconstruction of Chernihiv Oblast, which was damaged during the Russian occupation.

The delivery from the staff and Members of the Saeima will also include decorated gingerbread hearts and special greeting cards to be designed on 21 December at the creative Christmas workshop by the Parliament building.
