Marija Golubeva, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima, during a visit to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, underlined that Ukraine’s place is in the family of European Union (EU) Member States. Together with other members of the U4U (“United for Ukraine”) parliamentary platform for the support of Ukraine, M.Golubeva signed a joint statement expressing strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, as well as its place in the EU.
Referring to the historic decision to grant Ukraine the status of EU candidate country, in a joint statement representatives of the EU Parliaments commit to providing Ukraine with all the necessary support in the areas identified by the European Commission, which would allow for the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine in the first half of 2023 and possibly concluding them by 2029. The EU integration is the only way to ensure the success of a democratic country in the post-Soviet and post-totalitarian space. Such development would guarantee lasting peace in Europe, said in the statement.
The parliamentarians also express their commitment to continue providing political, military, economic and humanitarian support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian armed aggression. Ukraine’s victory in this war is existentially important for both Ukraine and all democracies in the world. Ukraine defends the security and stability of the Euro-Atlantic space, our own security and stability, as well as our common values, highlighted the statement.
The MPs condemn the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as Belarus’ involvement in this war, and express their conviction that in order to stop Russia’s aggressive conduct, it is necessary to ensure full de-occupation of Ukraine’s territory, reparation of losses and prosecution of perpetrators.
The statement also supports the work of the International Crimean Platform, and reiterates unwavering solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
The delegation in Kyiv congratulated Ukraine on its Independence Day and met with the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk, Ukraine’s Vice-Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olga Stefanishyna, and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
The parliamentary platform U4U in support of Ukraine was established on 22 March this year at the initiative of the European Parliament, EU national parliaments and members of the Ukrainian Parliament. It brings together parliamentarians who support Ukraine’s path to Europe.
