(08.07.2022.)

“We thank you for your support for the security of Latvia and the Baltic region. Each soldier from Spain, serving here, in Latvia, side by side with soldiers from Latvia and other NATO countries, is a representative of your country,” said Inese Lībiņa‑Egnere, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, on Friday, 8 July, during a meeting with Meritxell Batet Lamaña, President of the Congress of Deputies of the Kingdom of Spain, and the high level delegation accompanying the President.

Lībiņa-Egnere underlined that, ever since the invasion of Russia in Ukraine in 2014, Spain has shown a model example of European and transatlantic solidarity. “We thank Spain for hosting the recent NATO Summit in Madrid. Decisions of historic importance for Latvia, the Baltics, and the entire eastern flank of NATO were made during this Summit,” said the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima.

Discussing the diplomatic relations of the two countries, Lībiņa‑Egnere noted the long history of our cooperation ties and the particularly fruitful relations of Latvia and Spain in the last few decades.

During the meeting, the participants also discussed the future opportunities of parliamentary cooperation, support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s aggression, energy independence, combatting disinformation, and other topical issues.
