Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, is on a working visit to Poland, where she is participating in a meeting of women parliamentary speakers of EU countries on the current situation concerning war refugees and the next steps needed for the support of Ukrainian people.

Together, the parliamentary speakers visited the Polish‑Ukrainian border crossing point and refugee centre in Chełm, as well as a humanitarian assistance centre in suburban Warsaw. In addition, the politicians participated in a discussion at the Polish parliament.

“Talking with Ukrainian war refugees here in Poland, I hear that their greatest desire is to return home as soon as possible. It will be possible after the war ends with Ukrainian victory. But this will not happen of its own accord, not without a fight. It is essential that the democratic world provide unceasing support for Ukraine. First of all, it is necessary to provide all the required weapon and ammunition supplies so that Ukrainians can fight for their country. Second, the sanctions against Russia and Belarus must be tightened. Third, Ukraine needs a clear perspective regarding Europe,” emphasised Mūrniece.

Since the beginning of the war, the European Union countries have shown unparalleled solidarity and adopted unprecedented decisions. But we must not stop, we must continue working together to help Ukraine, expressed the Speaker of the Saeima to her counterparts.

Speakers and deputy speakers from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, as well as Ukraine and the European Parliament participated in the meeting in Poland.

The visit of women parliamentary speakers to Poland was held in solidarity with the Ukrainian women forced to flee their war‑torn homeland. Speaker Mūrniece was invited to this visit by Elżbieta Witek, Speaker of the lower house of the Parliament of the Republic of Poland.
