(18.09.2021.)

Closing her official visit to the Kingdom of Sweden, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, participated in the traditional Baltic Day festival in the Sollentuna ethnographic centre on 18 September.

“This celebration is like a small song and dance festival in Sweden! You are our cultural ambassadors, loyal to the Latvian cultural heritage,” said the Speaker in her address to the festival participants.

The Baltic Day festival is organised in Sweden since 2006, and celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. The festival is an annual meeting place for choirs, dance and music groups, as well as artisans and food vendors, all united by their origin on the opposite shore of the Baltic Sea.

This year, the festival audience was introduced to Latvian cultural heritage by the dance group Zibenītis and the Stockholm Latvian Choir, which celebrated its 75th anniversary last year.

Speaker Ināra Mūrniece and the accompanying delegation, as well as their Estonian and Lithuanian counterparts, are visiting Sweden to participate in the events marking the 30th anniversary of the renewal of the Baltic States' independence and diplomatic relations with Sweden and to meet Swedish officials.

The Latvian delegation includes Juris Rancāns, Chair of the Saeima Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee, Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, Deputy Chair of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee, and Velta Čebotarenoka, President of the 4 May Declaration Club.
