On Tuesday, 16 January, Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairperson of the Georgian parliament, visited the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia, Saeima, where he and Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, signed the strategic partnership memorandum between the Parliament of Georgia and the Saeima. The memorandum is a commitment to develop strategic partnership and deepen parliamentary cooperation.

Speaker Mūrniece expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to host her Georgian counterpart at such a pivotal moment for Latvia and Georgia, as 2018 marks the centenary of independence for both countries, and March of this year will witness the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between them. Irakli Kobakhidze is the first speaker of a parliament to visit Latvia during its centenary year.

“Active political dialogue between Latvia and Georgia brings our countries closer together. Last year, Baltic and Nordic speakers visited Georgia. Members of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Committees of both parliaments work in close conjunction with each other. Our good political dialogue will lead to deeper economic cooperation”, said the Speaker of the Saeima.

“Georgia has shown its decisiveness by implementing significant reforms”, stated Speaker Mūrniece and urged Georgia to continue reforms is such complicated areas as the justice system and economy. The Speaker of the Saeima reiterated Latvia’s support for Georgia’s European and NATO aspirations.

Irakli Kobakhidze noted that Latvia is a role model for Georgia and that Georgia aspires to emulate the successful growth of Latvia. The Georgian speaker also thanked Latvia for its unwavering support to Georgia, especially the county’s territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic integration efforts.

The Speaker of the Saeima also voiced concerns about Russia’s actions towards the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. “Our country strongly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”, underlined Ināra Mūrniece.

The meeting was also attended by Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima; Lolita Čigāne, Chair of the Saeima European Affairs Committee; Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, Chair of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee; Rihards Kols, Deputy Chair of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee; and Dzintars Zaķis, Chair of the Group for Interparliamentary Relations with Georgia.
