Ināra Mūrniece in Washington, D.C.: Holocaust victims will be forever remembered by Latvia

(12.04.2016.)

“The Holocaust is an unfathomable historic tragedy for the Jewish people and Latvia as a country. Holocaust victims will always be remembered in Latvia,” said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, as she visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum during her working visit to the United States.

The Speaker said that thousands of lives were broken by the Holocaust in Latvia as more than 70 thousand Latvian Jews perished, while around 25 thousand Western Jews were deported to Latvia and killed on our soil. She stressed that crimes against humanity have no statute of limitations and that people in Latvia pay tribute both to Holocaust victims and their saviours.

Speaker Mūrniece presented the Holocaust Memorial Museum with a book published in Latvia. “Jelgava. Summer of 1941: the Holocaust”, by historian Andris Tomašūns, is a compilation and study of documents and newspaper articles on the tragic events perpetrated by the Nazi occupation regime in Jelgava, one of the largest towns in Latvia. “May this book become a small, but essential addition to the collection of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.,” wished the Speaker of the Saeima.

Speaker Mūrniece is visiting the United States from 9 to 13 April, and Canada from 13 to 18 April; she is accompanied on the visit by Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima. While in the U.S., the delegation of the Latvian parliament is accompanied by Andris Razāns, Latvian ambassador to the United States.
