Statement of the Chairmen of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on the Situation in Ukraine

(29.08.2014.)

We condemn on the strongest terms the invasion into Ukraine’s territory by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Focused actions of the Russian Federation violating bilateral and multilateral agreements on Ukraine’s soveregnity and territorial integrity, and its direct support of terrorist military units threaten not only Ukraine’s or its neighbours’ security, but also security of EU and NATO member states and stability in Europe.

We address EU and NATO political leaders, parliaments of EU and NATO member states and the entire international community to take urgent actions in order to stop aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and to ensure Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security of all EU and NATO member states. We call on the European Council on 30 August 2014 and NATO Summit on 4–5 September 2014 to demand the immediate withdrawal of armed forces of the Russian Federation from the territory of Ukraine and to decide on further actions, including enhancing military cooperation with Ukraine and imposing broader economic and political sanctions on the Russian Federation.

We emphasise the right and freedom of each sovereign state to decide on its future, to choose the direction of its foreign policy and to take decisions on accession to any international organisation or alliance without any external pressure. We express our solidarity with and support to Ukraine and its people.
