The fate of the Republic of Latvia established on 18 November 1918 as a free and democratic state was determined In Riga on 11 November 1919.

Every year on 11 November – Lāčplēša Day – we commemorate the Latvian soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the newly established Republic of Latvia. Today we also pay homage to all the sons and daughters of Latvia who have fallen in international missions until the present day. They fulfilled their duty with a clear vision about a free and independent Latvia.

By our work, faith, love and a free Latvia as the ultimate goal, all of us shape and safeguard the future of our state. With disrupted destinies and lost lives we have paid a high price for an independent Latvia. A free and independent Latvia should not be taken for granted; it must be passed on to our children and grand-children and must always be kept in mind. Latvia is and will be what we make it.

On this dark November evening may the light of thousands of candles and torches illuminate every home throughout Latvia. Let us remember our history and honour our countrymen In Latvia and all around the world.
