Road carriers may choose electronic registration for crossing the Latvia–Russia border

(12.01.2012.)

On Thursday, 12 January, the Saeima adopted in the final reading amendments to the Law on the State Border of the Republic of Latvia, according to which truck drivers will have an option to apply electronically for crossing the border between Russia and Latvia and thus avoid long queues near the border.

Applying in advance for border crossing will give road carriers an opportunity to plan on spending minimal time for queuing at the Latvia-Russia border. This option will also improve road safety and enable a more efficient use of road carriers’ resources.

According to the amendments, remote registration for queuing will be handled by the Ministry of Transport, which will be able to delegate this task to the professional association of road carriers that represents Latvia in the International Road Transport Union.

It is planned that the electronic registration for border-crossing queuing will be launched on 1 July 2012.
