The Saeima to take part in Job Shadow Day

(26.01.2011.)

This year the Saeima will once again participate in Job Shadow Day. Schoolchildren are invited to shadow MPs and staff members on 16 February in order to observe firsthand the routine work of the parliament and thus to become acquainted with the skills and knowledge they will need in the future.

“From experience to understanding – with this motto the parliament will open its doors to schoolchildren this year. One of the events when the parliament is open to schools will take place on 16 February, when Job Shadow Day 2011 will take place throughout Latvia,” says Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima.

“On behalf of MPs and staff members of the Saeima, I cordially invite young people who are interested in politics or legislation and who seek career challenges in strengthening Latvia as a parliamentary republic to become the parliament’s shadows. We will work together in parliamentary groups and committees, meet in work groups and debate on current events. I am convinced that many of you will find your calling and will want to get actively involved in politics,” says the Speaker encouragingly.

This will be the third time that the Saeima is taking part in the annual Job Shadow Day events that are organized by Junior Achievement – Latvia. In 2009 the Saeima was named among the best places to shadow, and last year Job Shadow Day brought to the Saeima more than 200 schoolchildren of different ages from all over Latvia.
