The US military presence in the Baltic region as well as the support provided by the US Congress for the development of military infrastructure in our countries is and will remain highly significant in the years to come. We invite our partners from the USA to consider the need for a long-term support programme. This was emphasised by Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, during a meeting with representatives of the US Congress as part of the working visit to the USA. The Speaker of the Saeima is visiting the USA together with parliamentarians from the Baltic States and Poland.

Mūrniece expressed her gratitude for the  unwavering support of congressional representatives regarding security matters in the Baltic States. We appreciate that, regardless of party affiliation, US politicians have consistently stood up for Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. We are interested in developing political dialogue with US congressional representatives and senators, said the Speaker of the Saeima.

In Washington, DC, members of the Baltic delegations met representatives of the US Senate  Committee on Foreign Relations — Chair James E. Risch and Ranking Member Bob Menendez — as well as William Keating, Chair of the US House Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, Energy, and the Environment.

The delegations of the four states also met the US House Baltic Caucus co-chairs Rep. John Shimkus and Rep. Adam Schiff. The congressional representatives confirmed their support for the initiative of the four states to assume joint responsibility for security matters, emphasising that together we are stronger and able to do more. The USA is aware of the new security threats in cyberspace, and the Baltic experience may also be useful to the USA.

The Speaker of the Saeima greatly appreciated the initiative of the co-chairs to prepare resolutions honouring the 30th anniversary of restoring the Baltic States’ independence.

Speaker Mūrniece and Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima, are on a working visit to the USA from 29 February to 6 March.
