By resisting the Russian aggression and implementing reforms, Ukraine has manifested its nation's strength. Latvia calls on Ukraine to continue carrying out reforms. Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, stressed this on Tuesday, 4 April, at the Saeima, during a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who is on an official visit to Latvia.

The Speaker of the Saeima said that Latvia's society takes a lot of interest in the developments in Ukraine and is highly supportive of its people. Mūrniece emphasised that Latvia has been consistently supporting Ukraine on its chosen path of European integration. The Latvian parliament has always actively backed Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ināra Mūrniece stressed the significant joint support to Ukraine and the Eastern Partnership countries shown by the Baltic States and Nordic countries (NB8). Upon Latvia's initiative, the NB8 speakers of parliament paid a visit to Kiev, thus confirming the entire region's solidarity with Ukraine, said the Speaker.

Poroshenko thanked Latvia for its strong political and practical support for the implementation of reforms. He also singled out the personal contribution of the Speaker of the Saeima in caring for the rehabilitation in Latvia of Ukrainian children, who have become victims of the war.

Mūrniece reaffirmed Latvia's position that economic sanctions against Russia should be maintained until the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements.

Mūrniece and Poroshenko expressed concern about the Zapad 2017 military exercise to take place in autumn in Belarus near the borders of both countries. The exercise is supposed to involve numerous Russian troops palying out offensive scenarios. The Speaker and the Ukrainian President stressed the importance of strategic communication to counter the Kremlin's propaganda.
