“Work in the field of foreign affairs is more important than ever, and the world we will live in depends directly on our ability to negotiate and find solutions. Security issues are now undeniably at the forefront, and we must do everything possible to foster peace in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as to build a common understanding of democratic values worldwide,” emphasised Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa on Wednesday, 17 September, during a meeting with the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the parliaments of the Baltic States and Türkiye.
The Latvian delegation is led by Chair of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee Ināra Mūrniece, the Lithuanian delegation by Chair of the Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee Remigijus Motuzas, the Estonian delegation by Chair of the Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson, and the Turkish delegation by Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Fuat Oktay.
Chair of the Turkish Foreign Affairs Committee confirmed Türkiye’s unwavering support for strengthening security in the Baltic region, stressing that Türkiye has always played, and will continue to play, an essential role in Europe’s security architecture.
The parties agreed on the need to seek even closer cooperation in the field of security. As Daiga Mieriņa highlighted, our countries are also bound by cooperation within NATO, and Latvia greatly values Türkiye’s contribution to strengthening the Alliance’s eastern flank, including through air policing. The Speaker of the Saeima also underlined the importance of NATO military operations in safeguarding critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
The discussion further addressed economic cooperation, focusing on opportunities for attracting investment. Close ties in tourism were also discussed, and cooperation in the field of education was underlined.
From 16 to 17 September, Riga is for the first time hosting the meeting of delegations led by the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the parliaments of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Türkiye. The aim of the meeting is to explore opportunities for closer cooperation in addressing global challenges.
