"Ukraine is fighting not only for its own values, but also those of the whole democratic world, and your courageous struggle impresses societies in many countries and sets an example for the entire world," said Dagmāra Beitnere-Le Galla, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, at a meeting with Denys Herman, Chair of the Subcommittee on Modern Information Technologies and Innovations in Budgeting Process of the Committee on Budget of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada (Parliament), on Tuesday, 12 July.

The Ukrainian MP thanked Latvia for its assistance to Ukraine, highlighting in particular its support for the European Union candidate country status.

Ukraine can count on Latvia's help in the future, including on the path towards closer integration into the European Union. Ukraine still has many reforms ahead, including in the fight against corruption, but given the way you defend your homeland, there is no doubt that you will be strong enough to achieve everything necessary to become a full-fledged member of the European Union, stressed Deputy Speaker Beitnere-Le Galla.

The parties also discussed issues related to the recovery of Ukraine. Denys Herman expressed gratitude for the support to the Ukrainian people who, fleeing the war, have found refuge outside their homeland, and stressed the desire of many Ukrainians to return as soon as possible.

As Beitnere-Le Galla pointed out, history shows that war and consequent emigration have destroyed the fate of many people. In this respect, too, the events in Ukraine have created new global challenges, and the key is not to allow sowing chaos, as this would only benefit the Kremlin, added the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima.

Respect for the human being and democracy, as well as human rights, are the values that we must protect together, the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima said, highlighting as crucial the fight against the Kremlin propaganda.

Uldis Budriķis, Chair of the Saeima Group for Promoting Cooperation with the Parliament of Ukraine, also took part in the meeting.
