“It is in our interests that Ukraine secures a complete victory and fully restores its independence and territorial integrity. It is a precondition for sustainable peace in Europe,” said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, on Monday, 9 May, at a meeting with Olena Kondratiuk, Deputy Chair of the Parliament of Ukraine.

During the meeting, the parties discussed support for Ukraine across three dimensions: political, practical, and moral. “The events in Ukraine are changing the history of the whole Europe and the world. New concepts have emerged with greater clarity, both in politics and in our day-to-day life. We see that the modern world has a place for heroic human deeds. We must be able to choose a side and decide which values we will defend,” said the Speaker of the Saeima.

Latvia supports sanctions against Russia and its global isolation from other countries. “We support granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine,” stressed Mūrniece, stating that Ukraine’s accession to the EU would be a discerning step that would help strengthen Ukraine, as well as the West in general. In addition, the Speaker of the Saeima noted that Latvia would continue to provide practical assistance to Ukraine, including military support.

The Deputy Chair of the Ukrainian Parliament thanked the Latvian Parliament, government, and people for the support provided both at an international level and by helping the Ukrainians who, fleeing from the war, have arrived in Latvia.

The Deputy Speakers of the Saeima Dagmāra Beitnere-Le Galla and Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, the Deputy Secretary of the Saeima Inese Voika, the Chair of the Group for promoting cooperation with the Parliament of Ukraine Aldis Adamovičs and the Deputy Chair of the Group Uldis Budriķis, as well as the Deputy Chair of the Social and Employment Matters Committee Anda Čakša also participated in the meeting with the Deputy Chair of the Parliament of Ukraine.
