On Monday, 20 April, while attending the Conference of the Speakers of EU Parliaments in Rome, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, extended her deepest condolences regarding the Mediterranean tragedy.
It is estimated that nearly 1000 migrants perished last night in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya.
“Current developments in the Mediterranean region are alarming; we need to respond by offering emergency relief and seeking long-term interventions. The Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU strongly supports convening the extraordinary joint meeting of the Foreign and Home Affairs Ministers on 20 April”, stressed Mūrniece.
