On Thursday, 4 December, the Saeima supported a draft resolution on participation of soldiers from the Latvian National Armed Forces in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan.

This means that until 31 December 2015, the Latvian troops will join the international Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan led by NATO.

It is planned to involve up to 30 Latvian soldiers who will assume various advisory and staff officer positions with the aim to support training of local Afghani forces. Ainars Latkovskis, Chairman of the Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee, emphasised during the plenary sitting that Latvian soldiers will not take part in combat operations.

Latkovskis also pointed out that in light of the collective commitment to continue involvement in Afghanistan, it is important for Latvia to join its NATO allies in this mission and thus to demonstrate its readiness to join NATO and its partners’ efforts in maintaining and further strengthening security and stability in Afghanistan.

The participation of Latvian troops in Afghanistan was supported by 83 MPs.
