On Wednesday, 23 March, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima began to work on amendments to the Citizenship Law and decided to form a subcommittee for drafting the new version of the Law. Today the Committee reviewed two draft laws submitted by parliamentary groups and a letter by the President of Latvia outlining his proposals for amendments to the Citizenship Law.

On Friday, 18 March, during the meeting with Andris Piebalgs, the EU Commissioner for Development, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, emphasised that our country has to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by Latvia’s upcoming presidency of the EU and by the Treaty of Lisbon.
On Thursday, 17 March, the Saeima adopted in the final reading amendments to the Advertising Law proposed by the Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee; these amendments establishing uniform regulations for posting advertisements will come into effect in 2012.
Art school students launch the Portrait Gallery project in the Saeima
On Thursday, 10 March, the Saeima and the Janis Rozentāls Art High School began their cooperation project, the Portrait Gallery, which enables young artists to draw portraits of MPs and sketches of situations during plenary sittings.
Imants Lieģis: Close cooperation between the EU and the NATO is needed for solving crisis in Libya

Speaker and Swedish MP discuss the involvement of youths in politics
On 4 March, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Anton Abele, a Swedish MP of Latvian descent, and discussed how to encourage young people to become involved in public processes.
The Baltic Assembly (BA) invites submissions for the annual competition for the BA Prizes for Literature, the Arts and Science; these submissions should be sent by 1 June 2011.
The Economic Committee supports limiting the power of dominant retailers
On Wednesday, 2 March, members of the Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee of the Saeima supported and submitted for the second reading the amendments to the Competition Law which will force retailers that are in a dominant position to shorten deadlines for their settlement of payments with manufacturers.
In preparation for the 20th anniversary of de facto restoration of Latvia’s independence, the Saeima invites children and youths to take part in a contest of drawings to design a logo that symbolises this significant event. On 21 August 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia adopted the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia, which restored the de facto independence of Latvia and clearly marked the return of Latvia into the family of Western European countries.
Imants Lieģis: Violence against Libyan civilians is condemnable
Imants Lieģis, head of the Latvian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, condemns the violence inflicted by the Libyan state on its civilians. He stated that the NATO PA is planning to officially censure Libya regarding this matter.
