On Wednesday, 27 May, Zanda Kalniņa‑Lukaševica, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, and fellow parliamentarians welcomed Members of the United States House of Representatives at the Saeima and expressed gratitude to the U.S. Congress for its strong support to the Baltic States.

“We truly value the historic role of the United States in strengthening Latvia’s security and are grateful for the unwavering support for Latvia and the Baltic States in the U.S. Congress. Close cooperation, including support provided under the Baltic Security Initiative, has significantly contributed to Latvia’s security and defence,” said Zanda Kalniņa‑Lukaševica in her address to the Members of Congress.

The parliamentarians discussed deepening cooperation in defence, energy, and high-tech. The need to maintain continued support for Ukraine was also emphasised. The discussion focused strongly on the hybrid attacks, acts of sabotage, and disinformation campaigns carried out by Russia.

Highlighting the excellent parliamentary cooperation, both sides underscored the importance of mutual exchange, including visits to Latvia by Members of the Congress and congressional advisors, as well as meetings between Members of the Saeima and Members of the Congress in Washington and elsewhere.

Members of the U.S. Congress Don Bacon, Ed Case, Dan Crenshaw, and Lloyd Doggett met with Saeima Presidium members Zanda Kalniņa‑Lukaševica, Edvards Smiltēns, Jānis Grasbergs, and Antoņina Ņenaševa, as well as Raimonds Bergmanis, Chair of the Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee; Ainars Latkovskis, Chair of the National Security Committee; and Irma Kalniņa, Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Head of the parliamentary group for cooperation with the United States.
