On Thursday, February 16, the Saeima adopted urgent amendments to the Law on Assistance to Ukrainian Civilians. They provide for the possibility of transferring the state-owned vehicles free of charge to the Ukrainian government — for general support to Ukrainian society.
“Currently, the vehicles confiscated from intoxicated drivers are sold, recycled or disassembled for spare parts, however, in light of current circumstances, they could be used to support the Ukrainian people,” noted Raimonds Bergmanis, Chair of the Defence, Interior and Corruption Prevention Committee of the Saeima, responsible for the draft amendments.
It is stipulated that the decision on the transfer of vehicles under the jurisdiction of the State will be taken in each specific case by the Cabinet in accordance with the regulations regarding the procedures by which the State shall transfer movable property to the ownership of foreign governments and intergovernmental organisations free of charge. It is planned to organise the process of vehicle transfer through the association, which cooperates with the Ukrainian government and has received specific requests for assistance, expressed in annotation of the law.
The law will enter into force on the day following its promulgation.
