On Wednesday, 13 September Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, hosted a meeting with George J. Furey, Speaker of the Senate of Canada. Speaker Mūrniece emphasised that Canada is an exceptionally strong ally in strengthening the region’s security and pointed out that bilateral cooperation between Canada and Latvia in other areas – such as economy, education and culture – has also been developing successfully.

Speaker Mūrniece expressed appreciation for the deployment of Canada-led battle group in Latvia and noted that the NATO presence here sends out a clear message about the unity of its member states. She emphasised that Latvia is doing its best in accommodating the allied forces and expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to visit the Ādaži military base together with the Canadian Speaker.

Speaker Mūrniece underlined Latvia’s willingness to expand economic cooperation with Canada, welcoming the anticipated coming into effect of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and trade Agreement (CETA), which would open new opportunities for local businesses. “We are proud to be the first EU member state to ratify the agreement”.

Speaker Mūrniece and Speaker Furey both agreed that Latvia and Canada have a great potential for further developing and diversifying cooperation in higher education.

The Speaker of the Senate of Canada with his accompanying delegation are on an official visit to Latvia until 16 September.
