On Thursday, 10 February, the Saeima adopted in the second and final reading the Draft Law ratifying the agreement between the Benelux and Baltic States on the automatic recognition of higher education qualifications.

Following its entry into force, higher education qualifications will automatically be recognised between the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Lithuania, and the Republic of Estonia.

“The agreement between the Benelux and Baltic States on the automatic recognition of higher education qualifications is a welcome historic agreement and a stimulus to develop a comprehensive practice at the European Union level,” said Rihards Kols, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, which is responsible for advancing the Draft Law in the Saeima. The Chair of the Committee noted that this agreement would promote mobility among students, as well as the general population and work force.

According to the summary of the Draft Law, there is an agreement between Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia in force since the beginning of 2019 that provides for the mutual recognition of higher education qualifications.
