Latvian MPs to chair interparliamentary discussions in Brussels on EU’s economic challenges

On Wednesday, 4 February, the Saeima as the national parliament of the EU presiding country, together with the European Parliament (EP), will hold a conference in Brussels dedicated to topicalities and challenges of the European Economic and Monetary Union. 
For the fourth time, the Interparliamentary Conference Under Article 13 of the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union will bring together members of national parliaments and the European Parliament, as well as high-level officials from European Union institutions.

This high-level Conference will be opened and its first session will be co-chaired by Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, and Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima. The first session of the Conference will be dedicated to the EU’s new investment plan aimed at stimulating public and private investments for growth and jobs in Europe. 

The second session will be devoted to the best practices in implementing the Fiscal Compact and structural reforms. It will be co-chaired by Roberto Gualtieri, Chairman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament, and Kārlis Šadurskis, Chairman of the Budget and Finance (Taxation) Committee of the Saeima. Jānis Reirs, Latvian Minister of Finance, will also be among the speakers in this session.  

The last session of the Conference will be co-chaired by Marita Ulvskog, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament, and Aija Barča, Chairperson of the Social and Employment Matters Committee of the Saeima. It will focus on strengthening the social dimension of the Economic and Monetary Union. In this session, Valdis Dombrovskis, Vice-President of the European Commission for the Euro and Social Dialogue, will also address the participants. 

The Interparliamentary Conference, which is one of the six parliamentary events organised by the Saeima as a part of the Latvian Presidency, will take place in Brussels within the framework of European Parliamentary Week.
