Vietnam is already Latvia's most significant economic partner in South Asia. Now that the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement is signed, new mutual business opportunities will help to expand the trade potential. Speaker Ināra Mūrniece stressed this on Friday, 20 October, at the Saeima, during a meeting with Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, who is in Latvia on an official visit.

The Speaker of the Saeima expressed gratification that Latvian entrepreneurs working in the field of information technology and wood processing have already successfully penetrated the Vietnamese market. Speaker Mūrniece noted that Latvian pharmaceutical and food manufacturers also were keen to expand to the Vietnamese market.

A topical issue in Latvian-Vietnamese bilateral relations is illegal migration. The Speaker of the Saeima emphasised Latvia's interest in combating this problem jointly, pointing out that the Latvian State Border Guard is eager to cooperate with the Vietnamese Immigration Service.

Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh attested that Vietnam disapproves of illegal migration and expressed commitment to continue talks with Latvia on the readmission agreement.
