14 February: Job Shadow Day at the Saeima

“Keep Latvia strong and keep building our country every day, think big, achieve ambitious goals and use all the knowledge you have got,” said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, to all the youths who had gathered at the Saeima on 14 February to shadow the MPs and employees of the Parliament.

“Job Shadow Day is a sort of experience exchange medium. You not only get to experience how different institutions work day-to-day, you also get the answers to your questions, learn more about things that are important to you and gain a better understanding of what to expect from politicians,” Speaker Mūrniece underlined.

Speaker of the Saeima also said that she is happy for the modern youths as they are much more free in their thinking, having grown up in a free Latvia, and expressed her admiration for their patriotism, especially considering the centenary of Latvia, which is a great source of inspiration for so many. Speaker added that, in the wake of our 100th anniversary, we tend to contemplate what Latvia means to each of us more often than at other times.

In her address to the youths, Speaker talked about the Plenary Chamber, the main room of the Saeima where MPs draft laws. She also talked about the history of the Parliament and its everyday work. Speaker Mūrniece urged schoolchildren to join the Youth Parliament, a parliamentary session allowing youngsters to step into the shoes of MPs and promote their ideas.

The Saeima hosted more than 200 school children on the Job Shadow Day, all keen to experience the everyday work of the Parliament. Shadows of MPs and the Saeima employees had an opportunity to see how legislature works and learn the inner processes of the parliamentary work.

The shadows were addressed by Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, and took the traditional family photo with MPs and employees of the Saeima on the Large Marble Staircase. The youths had access to different rooms of the Saeima building, committee meetings and other events hosted by the Saeima, including the visit of Honourable John Bercow, UK’s Speaker of the House of Commons.

The Saeima took part in the Job Shadow Day for the tenth consecutive year. It is one of the most popular institutions to be shadowed. Over the years, more than 2 000 schoolchildren from across Latvia have shadowed MPs and the Parliament staff.

The Job Shadow Day is a popular global initiative run by Junior Achievement in the framework of career education for children of all ages from grade 1 to 12. It gives schoolchildren an opportunity to experience different work environments and spend four to six hours following the everyday work of professionals they have chosen to shadow. The purpose of the Job Shadow Day is to get children acquainted with the skills required in different professions and sectors, as well as to help them choose their future careers and prepare for the labour market.
