On Sunday, 11 March, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, addressed the Lithuanian Parliament at a ceremonial sitting in honour of the Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania. Speaker Mūrniece opened her address saying: “On behalf of Latvia, allow me to congratulate Lithuania on 11 March, the Day of Restoration of Independence!”

The Speaker of the Saeima recalled 11 March 1990, when the determination of the Lithuanian people served as an inspiration to Latvians. “The spirit of Sajūdis, Tautas fronte and Rahvarinne lives on in our people. If need be, our people would repeat our joint journey”, Speaker Mūrniece stated.

“Today, we can truly appreciate that we have our independent states to cherish and be proud of”, the Speaker said. “The fates of our nations are bound together. This is a year when all three Baltic States celebrate the centenary of their statehood.”

“We are bound together by a shared past and common goals for the future. Our countries are located at the very front-line of freedom in Europe. We must work together, continuing close cooperation with our NATO partners to further strengthen the security of the Baltic region”, Speaker Mūrniece stated.

“Together with Poland, the Baltic States must implement important transport and energy projects, integrating the Baltics into the European infrastructure network”, Speaker Mūrniece emphasised.

“The close cooperation among the Baltic Stated enables us to grow stronger and promotes a more united, democratic and prosperous Europe,” the Speaker noted.

Upon the invitation of Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas, the Speaker of the Saeima visited Lithuania to participate in the celebrations in honour of the 28th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence. Speaker Mūrniece addressed the Lithuanian Parliament, attended the ceremonial raising of the flags of the Baltic States at Independence Square, and met with the speaker and members of the Parliaments of Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, and Iceland.
