Ināra Mūrniece: Latvia and Azerbaijan have good prospects in economic cooperation

On Monday, 17 July, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, met at the parliament with Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, who is in Latvia on an official visit. The Speaker of the Saeima emphasised that Latvia and Azerbaijan share a successful political dialogue and are interested in deepening economic cooperation.

Speaker Mūrniece appreciated the active contacts between the parliaments of Latvia and Azerbaijan. In May, Ogtay Asadov, Speaker of Azerbaijani parliament, visited the Latvian parliament, and the Saeima friendship group has invited their Azerbaijani counterparts to come to Latvia on a working visit.

The Speaker of the Saeima welcomed the declaration on establishing a strategic partnership between Latvia and Azerbaijan, which was signed today, as well as the concluded cooperation agreements in education, transport and construction safety supervision. The Latvia – Azerbaijan Business Forum, which also took place today, is a good platform for networking among entrepreneurs. 

During the meeting, the officials also discussed EU – Azerbaijani cooperation. Speaker Mūrniece stated that Latvia supports deepening EU-Azerbaijan relations in the framework of the Eastern Partnership. President Aliyev welcomed the EU’s individualised approach to each partner country within the Eastern Partnership. 

The meeting was also attended by Romāns Naudiņš, Chair of the Economics, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee and Deputy Chair of the Saeima group for interparliamentary relations with Azerbaijan, as well as Hosams Abu Meri, Chair of the Saeima group for interparliamentary relations with Azerbaijan.
