On Thursday, 15 September, the Saeima adopted in the first reading the draft law “On the Protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty on the Accession of Montenegro”, thus conceptually supporting ratification of the Protocol on Montenegro joining NATO.

The decision to invite Montenegro to launch accession negotiations was made by the foreign ministers of NATO member countries on 2 December 2015, and the Accession Protocol was signed on 19 May 2016. The signing of the Protocol initiated the ratification process, which requires each NATO member state to adopt the Accession Protocol.

Once the document is ratified in all member states of the Alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty ratification process will be initiated in Montenegro. According to the summary of the draft law, the accession process will be completed after the instruments of ratification are entrusted to the United States Department of State, which is the depository of the North Atlantic Treaty.
