“We established our own independent state, we fought for it and we have restored it. Now, strengthening our nation is a collective task, both for the National Armed Forces and society as a whole. Our nation will endure as long as we are prepared to defend it”, said Speaker Mūrniece on Thursday, 28 March, marking the 15th anniversary since Latvia became a NATO member, on a visit to National Armed Forces military base in Ādaži where she was accompanied by Members of Parliament.

"This is a very significant year — it marks the 15th anniversary since Latvia joined NATO, the 70th anniversary of the world’s most powerful military alliance, and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Latvian Army, which we are going to celebrate this summer," said the Speaker.

We live under the security umbrella provided by NATO, and we ourselves contribute to the security of both Latvia and of NATO, added Speaker Mūrniece, emphasising the need to counter hybrid threats.

Mūrniece reiterated that a majority in the Saeima supports spending at least 2 percent of gross domestic product to strengthen our defence capabilities. The Speaker also noted that the Saeima and its committees is closely monitoring the use of these funds and the implementation of plans for strengthening defence.

The Members of the Saeima visited Ādaži military base to discuss current national defence issues, and to learn about the development of the Ground Forces' Mechanised Infantry Brigade and the contribution of NATO's enhanced forward presence battlegroups to the security of Latvia.
