On Friday, 6 November, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Prime Minister of Ukraine. “Syrian crisis should not divert the attention of the international community from Ukraine,” she emphasised. Speaker Mūrniece also confirmed that Latvia will continue actively supporting the talks between Ukraine and the European Union (EU) and other international organisations.

Ināra Mūrniece congratulated Ukraine on becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. It is a diplomatic victory for the country and will draw greater attention of the international community to developments in Ukraine.

Speaker Mūrniece underlined that both countries have had similar history, and Latvia has always stood by Ukraine in times of hardship. Latvia will continuously support Ukraine’s European integration efforts and consistently defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ināra Mūrniece also pointed out that she is grateful to speakers of other Nordic and Baltic countries for accepting Latvia’s proposal to visit Ukraine next February. “This visit will be a proof of our region’s unified and unwavering support to Ukraine,” she said. Speaker Mūrniece also stressed that both countries enjoy strong political ties, which will be further enhanced by the forthcoming visit of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee to Ukraine.

Ināra Mūrniece praised the Ukrainian government for the political will to continue the reforms. She underlined the importance of the decentralisation reforms despite the situation in the Eastern regions of Ukraine. At the same time, Ukraine still has a long way ahead of it to achieve progress in corruption reduction, to improve the judicial system, and to stabilise the economy.

Prime Minister of Ukraine thanked the Speaker Mūrniece for organising Children of War, a benefit concert the proceeds of which went to social rehabilitation in Latvian care institutions of Ukrainian children affected by the war.

Speaker Mūrniece emphasised that the members of the Latvian Rotary chapter are to be thanked for the concert initiative, and she was happy and honoured to accept the invitation to be the patroness of the event.
